Dominion Resources was announced as the winner of the second annual HYPE (Helping Young Professionals Engage) Young Professional Workplace Award at the YP Workplace Award Celebration Thursday night at the Robinson Theater Community Arts Center. The Greater Richmond Chamber’s HYPE Young Professional Workplace Award recognizes businesses in the Greater Richmond Region that successfully attract and retain young employees, promote a healthy work/life balance, and provide opportunities for their young employees to develop leadership potential. Other finalists for the 2009 YP Workplace Award were Bon Secours Richmond Health System, CapTech Ventures, Inc., GENWORTH Financial, Inc. and Madison+Main.

Their strategy is to be a leading provider of electricity, natural gas, and related services in the energy-intensive Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States. They employ 4,644 full-time employees in the Richmond area with 1,267 under the age of 40.

• Offers some of the most competitive salaries for entry level workers in the Richmond Region. Their internships offer invaluable real work experience, they recruit nationwide. They also diversity scholarships to college students with diverse backgrounds.

• Dominion offers its employees "Dominion Link at Innsbrook," which is a social network similar to facebook specifically for Dominion employees.

• Mentoring of young or new employees is a part of the on-boarding process. High potential employees are identified at the time of hire and are mentored to reach their career objectives. Dominion's leadership also encourages job rotation and job shadowing to improve productivity.

• Dominion invests heavily in employee development through training programs like Six Sigma methodology, "Develop Myself" a tool to facilitate developmental coaching conversations between an employee and his/her supervisor, and Dominion Toastmasters to help employees develop leadership and public speaking skills.

• Young Dominion employees are involved in important business decisions by participating on or leading project teams, and are encouraged to provide feedback through surveys, blogs, and web pages.

• Dominion promotes work life balance by offering employees flexible schedules. Employees can choose 1 day off every other week or 1/2 days every Friday. • Dominion established the Dominion Young Professionals group in 2009 to encourage active engagement of young employees in the life of the company and the Greater Richmond community.
